The second days play saw action all around... After reducing the Australians to 214 New Zealand had to take a first innings lead to stay in the match... But they did not have a great start as Clark removed Redmond in the very first ball of the day. Ryder and How played some delightful strokes. Ryder seemed to be in good form but they soon fell one after the other.Watson picked up Ryder who perished due to a rash shot and Lee bowled a peach of a delivery to rattle the stumps of How. McCullum too failed to impress as he was dismissed for just 8 giving Johnson his first wicket. Taylor played some attacking cricket and was successful in doing so. He scored 40 runs in no time before he was LBW to Lee. Then it was a mere procession with Johnson doing most of the damage picking up 4. Flynn played well for his 39 and was left stranded at the crease. Kiwis were bundled out for 156 giving the Aussies a lead of 58 which seemed to be more than handy.
Aussies went into bat and had the worst starts possible when they lost Hayden to the very first ball of Chris Martin. Ponting and Katich tried to consolidate but Ponting perished to a rash shot for 17. Hussey and Clarke fell very cheaply and Australia were left struggling at 53 for 4. Symonds and Katich played sensibly and took the score past 100. Soon Symonds fell against the run of play. Katich at the other end was as solid as a rock and was playing the innings of his life. Watson too followed Symonds and Australia finished the day at 131 for 6. They had stretched their lead to 189. Kiwis have a chance if they reduce Australia to below 250.
