The third day promised a lot from the Kiwis but as usual they let the game slip away from them. Both Katich and Haddin started cautiously and added some useful runs. Katich went on to score a beautiful century which put Australians in a strong position. Katich along with tail enders Johnson and Clark added useful runs and stretched the lead to 327. New Zealand had a stiff target to chase and they had to bat out of their skins to pull this off. Brett Lee struck early by removing How in the very first over to claim his 300th Test wicket. Jessi Ryder and Redmond tried to add a few runs but however Ryder and Redmond fell quickly leaving the Kiwis at 40 for 3. Soon McCullum followed leaving the score at 49 for 4 with Clark picking up 2 wickets. Then came a resilliant partnership between Taylor and Flynn. Both were playing very sensibly. Taylor reached his fifty while Flynn was giving him good support from the other end. Johnson struck late in the day when he removed Flynn who inside edged the ball on to the stumps. Clark got Elliot in the last ball of the day reducing the Kiwis to 143 for 6. Only a miracle could stand between Australia and victory.
